FASHION STAR’S BIG FINALE

Express Fashion Star's Big Finale

The nail-biting season finale of Fashion Star went down on Friday when Cassandra, Daniel and Hunter all presented their final capsule collections. After taking into account all the hard work, sweat and tears that went into this season, the buyers agreed that Hunter was the big winner. She totally got the modern, cool vibe of the Express brand and we just couldn’t resist her designs for our women’s collection. Hunter, congrats—we love you!

According to Louise: Trending Now & Then

I love dipping back into decades past for style inspiration. An A-line 50’s skirt, a graphic 60’s mod print, a little 70’s boho flair. The only decade I’m not a fan of wearing is the 80’s, probably because I rocked out neons as a kid – been there, done that.

This summer I’m coveting the laid-back elegance of a long silhouette. The Maxi Skirt, the Palazzo Pant, the Column Dress: so sexy in an understated way. Check out Cassandra’s winning column dress for sale right now at Express. I remember talking through her inspiration for this piece back in the design studio, and it made me want to go on vacation somewhere glamorous and tropical. Cassandra was inspired by the 60’s, so it would look fab with a pair of giant, cream round shades. But if you want to give yours a different vibe, pair yours with a bright moto jacket or a sleeveless khaki vest, a panama hat or a lightweight knitted turban, and a cute flat loafer or a studded wedge. There are endless possibilities! A long skirt or dress is the perfect simple, versatile piece to give a little edge to. Style it towards any decade you like.

According to Louise: Night on the Town

Time to paint the town red and get your dancing shoes on! This week’s Fashion Star episode is all about partying in style, and what I love most about Erika’s buys is how diverse they were. Whether you’re into a sexy mini skirt and an urban biker jacket combo (check out Sylvia’s look) or a sophisticated, chic vibe inspired by Studio 54 (Jesse Ray and Garrett’s palazzo pants) – there is a totally different option for everyone.

Spring’s nightlife looks are all about being bold, so leave the black and grey at home and think stand-out prints and vivid colors. My top tip for styling those statement pieces: pair them with a warm neutral like Sylvia’s taupe, or with a soft sapphire like Jesse Ray and Garrett’s silk look. This looks more elegant and refined than mixing brights with black and white. Finally, try out a midi heel with your night-out look this season. Until now, platforms and stilettos have been sky-high, but 2013 is the year of the comfy heel – two or three inches is all you need. See? Size doesn’t always matter.

According to Louise: Dress Yourself Slim

According to Louise - Dress Yourself Slim

My absolute number one mantra when it comes to fashion is that trends should be available to every size – whether we’re talking the size of your body or the size of your wallet. Clothes are supposed to be fun, experimental, and most of all – used to your advantage to help flatter and streamline your figure.

So, what are my top tips for fashioning yourself skinny? Try a peplum hem, like the one on Hunter’s dress this week. The silhouette makes your waist look smaller, and the peplum fabric will hide a tummy or a muffin top. Just make sure it’s long enough to cover the parts you want hidden.  A peplum top or dress will create a gorgeous, retro-hourglass physique (think Mad Men), then slick on some red lipstick to finish off the look.

Secondly, choose a small print rather than a large one; this will help disguise any lumps and bumps. Use color to your advantage: darker colors will slim the areas you want to minimize while lighter tones will draw attention to your favorite parts. Finally, keep the fit as structured as possible – don’t drown yourself in fabric. Contrary to popular belief, it’ll actually make you look bigger. Instead, go for a size that actually fits: forget about the numbers on the label!

According to Louise: Cut It Out

Spring’s keyholes and cut-outs don’t have to be as scary as they look – here are my favourite ways to go with a gap!

The runways were full of midriffs and side-baring holes on dresses and tops, which, if you opt for a smaller split in the area of your body you feel most confident with, can be fun and flirty to wear.

Check out Amber’s gorgeous Mod Flare Dress from the first episode of Fashion Star, available NOW, for a fantastic example – the split is tiny and super-flattering. For another way to rock the trend, look for cut-outs on accessories – I’ve found earrings, cuffs, clutches and even shoes to fit the bill.

Keep the rest of your outfit bright but covered-up, drawing attention to the seductive, edgy keyholes elsewhere. And a quick tip, this trend is daring, so only go for one cut-out piece at a time, and be prepared to turn heads!
